Mattering in the Music Room: Incorporating SEL Practices in the Music Classroom

Sarah Alipanah has taught general music in public and private elementary schools for 18 years and currently works with infants through first graders in Washington, D.C. She holds a Master of Music Education from Elizabethtown College, with a focus on peacebuilding, social-emotional learning (SEL), and ethnomusicology.

Sara has presented Mattering in the Music Room: Incorporating SEL Practices in the Music Classroom at national and regional conferences, including the AOSA National Conference, the Feierabend Association Biennial Conference, MMEA (Maryland Music Educators Association Conference), and at workshops for the Middle-Atlantic, James River, and Berkshire Hudson Valley Orff Chapters.

She is trained in First Steps in Music, Orff Level I, World Music Drumming, and Drumming Up the Fun. Sara also hosts the podcast Mattering in the Music Room, which explores SEL in music education. Outside the classroom, she enjoys community theater, singing with Vocal Arts of Fairfax, reading, and exploring the outdoors with her husband, Tim.
